19 Aug GMC Yard Sale Adventure – Part 2
This family was shocked when they arrived to their new home.
We were all waiting, phones up, full of excitement and anticipation as this Habitat for Humanity homeowner turned the door knob to her new home and new life. Little did she know 7 bloggers and a team of GMC super heroes spent 4 days prepping, shopping, and DIYing to make her house a home.
It was a magical moment as this mother of 3 felt excitement and relief all at once. She shared with us that she was just talking to a co-worker about how much work was ahead of her to furnish her new home. Now, she could just enjoy this life transition with her family. Here’s what we did:
We all started with blank slates. And I mean blank.
And, with all of our thrifty finds and DIY projects we came up with this:
This is right off the front door entrance. It’s a small space that is connected to the dining area. GMC provided us with a little extra spending money to get them brand new furniture, like these two fun chairs. There’s our suitcase side table!
We found tons of adorable jars at low prices! This helped us add color to the space for not a lot of money!
Apple boxes were sanded down, stained, and mounted to the wall to provide her with storage. We also repainted this cute little desk we found for $65! The mirror and chair were also yard sale finds.
There is the milk jug we scrubbed down and spray painted. It’ll catch umbrellas. The antique bench and door is the perfect spot to hang your coat and take your shoes off.
We also decorated the living room that is on the other side of the kitchen and just off the back yard. It turned out great!
Another set of trunks to serve as side tables. These ones are on a 1980’s TV stand that was adjustable. It was perfect!
We got this trunk with the idea of making it the coffee table. However, the sleeper couch we purchased sat a bit low, making this too tall for a coffee table. So, we swapped it with the storage units we sanded and stained and it worked out well!
Actually, last year on the GMC Yard Sale Adventure, Ashley of Simply Designing found these industrial storage units too and used them as a coffee table. So, when the trunk idea didn’t work out, I was relieved to remember what Ashley did so we could quickly adjust!
Here is the adorable bedroom for the little boy. He loves the Cavs and basketball. Christy of Confessions of a Serial Do It Yourselfer was smart to add all the storage as this room was tiiiinnyy.
She painted that dresser and added the racing stripe. Too cute.
Fadra of She Buys Cars outfitted the dining area and kitchen. That table fit the space perfectly!
I was obsessed with Nancy’s work on the little girl’s room! The gold and black was so classy! Check out her entire space at her site, Artsy Chicks Rule.
Our mentor for this trip was Courtney from French Country Cottage. Although she was there to help all of us, we decided to use her budget to get the homeowner a washer and dryer. A few more pops of color and the laundry room was complete.
A small bathroom was outfitted with fresh new towels, luxurious soaps, and a few storage pieces.
Allison of Two Thirty Five Designs rocked out the master bedroom. I loved the seamless integration of yard sale treasures and IKEA decor. Perfection.
And there you have it.
A family ready to create memories in a fully furnished house. I tell you what, I could totally go around the country decorating Habitat homes full time. I really could.
Thank you so much to GMC and the incredible team they sent out to be our support system through this crazy adventure. Although we were not compensated, the trip was provided on behalf of GMC.
